Regional Hip Hop Expo: Gainesville, Florida

I. AN INTRODUCTION

On Thursday, December 13th, 2012 I am hosting an event which will feature veteran hip hop artists from the following cities: Jacksvonille, Orlando, and Gainesville, Florida. Emcees, turntablists, bboys, poppers, beatboxers, and producers from throughout the region will be in attendance, as well as guest speakers, and poets. Please take the time to read the entire event description and be sure to visit all of the hyperlinks found throughout this summary.

II. FEATURED PERFORMERS

First, representing Jacksvonille, Florida, we have respected battle emcee Strife. Some of you old school Gainesville hip hop heads may remember Strife as winner of the Emcee Olympics at Soul Cypher 2003. Strife has been an active member of the Jacksvonille Hip Hop scene for over ten years, and is known for his stage presence, freestyle ability, and relentless work ethic.

Our second featured performer represents Orlando, Florida. This will be emcee/producer AMiAM's first Gainesville show, and we are honored to have him visit our city. AMiAM is one of many powerhouse performers from the OZONE (Orlando) and is no stranger to touring or performing for demanding Hip Hop audiences. Orlando is known for it's frequent emcee and bboy battles, exactly the type of environment that you would expect to produce an emcee like AMiAM. Also known for collaborating with emcee/producer Swamburger of Solillaquists of Sound, AMiAM is currently running specials on production packages and will be available for consultation at the show.

Along with DJ Robzilla, I (The Messenger) occupy the third featured performance slot in this event. DJ Robzilla-member of the Orlando-based turntablist crew the Table Hogs-has been DJing at bboy and emcee battles, appearing at turntablist events like Sunday Skool Skratch Sessions,  and performing at hip hop shows throughout Florida for over seven years. I myself have been hosting and performing at bboy and emcee battles throughout Florida for over ten years-the very place where DJ Robzilla and I first met. Together we perform in the honored tradition of one DJ, one emcee. We are one of the most booked musical groups in Gainesville (in any genre of music), and this year alone we have opened for: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nappy Roots, Afroman, Flobots, and Rittz to name a few. Robzilla and I always open up the floor for the bboys and poppers, and you can expect to see some incredible dancers at the show.

III. MORE THAN MUSIC

This expo will not only feature hip hop music, it will also showcase many aspects of Hip Hop culture spanning from turntablism to philosophy. We are proud to have Luis A.Caraballo-Burgos, an instructor at the University of Florida who is currently pursing his Ph.D in sociology, while also teaching the class: Sociology of Race in Hip Hop (SYA3940/AFA4931). Caraballo-Burgos will make several oral presentations to attendees on a variety of social issues and will answer questions from the audience after his presentations throughout the night. In addition to his academic success, Luis has been performing throughout the southeast since 2003 as the well respected turntablist known as DJ Luminous. As our house DJ for the night, Lumious will be providing good vibes, great music, and will help us in our (Hip Hop's) goal to provide an educational and inspirational atmosphere.

IV. LOCAL COLLECTIVE

The Hip-Hop Collective is a student run organization at the University of Florida and Santa Fe College that was founded (at U.F.) in 2001. For over a decade the Collective has been responsible for hosting staple Hip Hop jams such as Soul Cypher and Icing on the Break, which have attracted thousands of visitors to our city over the years. Many great bboys, bgirls, poppers, djs, emcees, graffiti artists, entrepreneurs, and talent of all kinds are  amongst the ranks of Collective alumni, and even today this organization continues to foster a habitat of self expression and the pursuit of self mastery. The Collective  host weekly practice sessions for bboys/bgirls, poppers, beatboxers, and emcees. For the first time in the Collective's history, emcees from the emcee department have formed their own group/crew known as P.H.L.E.G.M. These emcees meet twice a week for practice and discussions, and even share a portion of their practice time with the beatboxers from the Collective. This will be the first public performance from the Collective emcees, and we are proud to have them involved with this event. Poppers from the Collective crew G.P.D. (Gainesville Poppin Department) will be present, as well a number of Bboys. If you are interested in learning about, or practicing any of the elements of Hip Hop, this event will give you the opportunity to meet many talented practitioners and highly qualified teachers who always welcome new students.

V. MORE LOCAL AREA TALENT

Three Gainesville area poets/performance artist will be appearing to showcase some their work. Nicole Goff, David Maas, and Tom Miller will first perform individually, and then collectively as their newly formed performance group Some Assembly Required

The event will begin with music by DJ Luminous followed by several short presentations made by guest speakers and local poets. In addition to our featured performers, also performing is alternative hip-hop group Pinemount Kings,  and Gainesville-area rapper Fleetwood. Our host is Jarad Bowens, also known as Emcee G, owner and operator of G-yns Entertainment, co-founder of The Hip-Hop Collective, and my personal manager. Emcee G has appeared many times as the host of Soul Cypher, and G still competes in popping battles and cyphers held by the Collective.
